When Philistines Attack, Fight Back!

Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam and said to Samson,“Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us?” Judges 15:11

We all, like the Israelites, need to battle the Philistines and not allow them to rule. Any thought, agreement, attachment, belief, or decision that is allowed to reign in your life is a Philistine. As long as you give them power, they usurp the Lordship of Christ. During the time of Sampson, the Israelites became content with Philistine domination. Instead of recognizing and battling these opponents, they lived life according to enemy standards never possessing the freedom and fullness that God desired for them.

Any time thoughts come inviting you to doubt God’s love, goodness and faithfulness, your mind has been hit by a Philistine arrow. When you feel unloved, that God is withholding good things from you, or that He has abandoned you, another Philistine arrow has penetrated your heart.

Although you can’t prevent the Philistines from attacking, you can prevent them from ruling by determining to believe what God says is true. Regardless of what you are thinking or feeling, resist enemy attacks by battling with God’s Word. Battling might involve reading, reciting, memorizing, praying, or speaking God’s Word aloud. Coupled with speaking it, determine to believe it.

Don’t feel guilty for the thoughts and emotions that come, recognize you are in the midst of a battle and fight back. Let God’s Word become the bullets in your gun, the arrows in your quiver, the lightning in your sword. Start shooting back, aiming and releasing, and swing wildly and ferociously. Remember that you never battle alone. God is in His Word partnering with you as you fight to establish His lordship in your life.
